As if we needed another reason to celebrate our love of books, its National Young Readers Day! In honor of this event, observed annually on the second Tuesday in November, Christle Seal, Director of Educational Programs at The ¾«Æ·Â鶹 School, is sharing her top six book picks for young readers. Check out the short list below and happy reading!
- Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown Best for: Infants and older This classic story gives a rhythmic pattern to a bedtime routine. Plus, it reminds parents of the importance of everyday objects and interactions in a small childs life.
- Moo, Baa, La La La! by Sandra Boynton Best for: Infants and toddlers This board book gives new life to the animal sounds that young children love to repeat again and again using humor and rhyming.
- Press Here by Herve Tullet Best for: Toddlers and older This story teaches about cause and effect in an interactive way. Thats a tough task for a book, but its executed quite well!
- Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No-Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst Best for: Preschool and older This story brings humor to a less-than-ideal situation, which small children typically need varied lessons to understand. It is possible for unhappy situations to happen in any place and tomorrow is a new day!
- Owl Moon by Jane Yolen Best for: Preschool and older This picture book shows the wonderful bond that has developed between a father and his daughter, as he teaches her the importance of patience.
- Mercy Watson to the Rescue by Kate DiCamillo Best for: Pre-Kindergarten and older This early chapter book has a silly storyline about a pig who thinks like a human. Its an excellent read-aloud for young children to help develop vocabulary skills as well as the ability to follow a timeline of events.
